  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to human services; prohibiting a drug felon 
  1.3             from receiving cash assistance under TANF and general 
  1.4             assistance; amending Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 
  1.5             256D.05, by adding a subdivision; proposing coding for 
  1.6             new law as Minnesota Statutes, chapter 256J. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 256D.05, is 
  1.9   amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.10     Subd. 9.  [TEN-YEAR BAR FOR GA.] After July 1, 1997, a 
  1.11  person who has been convicted under any federal or state law of 
  1.12  a felony for the possession, use, or distribution of a 
  1.13  controlled substance, as defined in section 102(6) of the 
  1.14  Controlled Substance Act, United States Code, title 21, section 
  1.15  802(6), is prohibited from receiving public assistance under 
  1.16  general assistance for ten years from the date of conviction. 
  1.17     Sec. 2.  [256J.50] [TIME LIMIT FOR TANF ASSISTANCE.] 
  1.18     After July 1, 1997, a person who has been convicted under 
  1.19  any federal or state law of a felony for the possession, use, or 
  1.20  distribution of a controlled substance, as defined in section 
  1.21  102(6) of the Controlled Substance Act, United States Code, 
  1.22  title 21, section 802(6), is prohibited from receiving public 
  1.23  assistance under temporary assistance for needy families under 
  1.24  Public Law Number 104-193 for ten years from the date of 
  1.25  conviction.
