  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to retirement; public employees retirement 
  1.3             association; authorizing the purchase of prior service 
  1.4             credit by certain employees of the state board of 
  1.5             public defense. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  [PUBLIC EMPLOYEES RETIREMENT ASSOCIATION; STATE 
  1.8   BOARD OF PUBLIC DEFENSE EMPLOYEE PRIOR SERVICE CREDIT PURCHASE.] 
  1.9      (a) An eligible person described in paragraph (b) is 
  1.10  entitled to purchase service credit from the public employees 
  1.11  retirement association for the period of omitted deductions 
  1.12  December 19, 1992, through December 27, 1994. 
  1.13     (b) An eligible person for purposes of paragraph (a) is a 
  1.14  person who: 
  1.15     (1) was born on August 17, 1950; 
  1.16     (2) was employed by Winona county through 1992; 
  1.17     (3) is currently employed by the state board of public 
  1.18  defense in the third judicial district public defender's office; 
  1.19  and 
  1.20     (4) had omitted member contributions for public employment 
  1.21  during the period December 19, 1992, through December 27, 1994. 
  1.22     (c) The prior service credit purchase payment amount is 
  1.23  governed by Minnesota Statutes, section 356.55.  Authority to 
  1.24  purchase the service credit expires on July 1, 2000. 
  1.25     (d) A person purchasing service credit under this section 
  2.1   must provide sufficient documentation of eligibility to the 
  2.2   executive director of the public employees retirement 
  2.3   association. 
  2.4      Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  2.5      Section 1 is effective on the day following final enactment.
