relating to natural resources; requiring report to set goals for carbon sequestration
in public and private forests.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1. new text begin CARBON SEQUESTRATION IN FORESTS OF THE STATE; GOALS.

new text begin The commissioner of natural resources must establish goals for increasing carbon
sequestration in public and private forests in the state. To achieve the goals, the commissioner
must identify sustainable forestry practices that increase the ability of forests to sequester
atmospheric carbon while enhancing other ecosystem services, such as improved soil and
water quality. By January 15, 2022, the commissioner must submit a report with the goals
and recommended forestry practices to the chairs and ranking minority members of the
legislative committees and divisions with jurisdiction over natural resources policy.
