  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             proposing an amendment to the Minnesota Constitution, 
  1.3             article I, by adding a section; providing for equality 
  1.4             of rights under the law for men and women.  
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT PROPOSED.] 
  1.7      The following amendment to the Minnesota Constitution, 
  1.8   article I, is proposed to the people.  If the amendment is 
  1.9   adopted, a new section will read as follows:  
  1.10     Sec. 18.  Equality of rights under the law shall not be 
  1.11  abridged or denied by the state of Minnesota or any of its 
  1.12  political subdivisions on account of gender.  The legislature 
  1.13  may enforce the provisions of this section by appropriate 
  1.14  legislation.  
  1.15     Sec. 2.  [SUBMISSION TO VOTERS; SCHEDULE.] 
  1.16     The proposed amendment shall be submitted to the people at 
  1.17  the 1996 general election.  If ratified, the amendment is 
  1.18  effective November 1, 1998.  The question submitted shall be:  
  1.19     "Shall the Minnesota Constitution be amended to provide men 
  1.20  and women with equality of rights under the law? 
  1.21                                     Yes .......
  1.22                                     No ........"
