  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to municipalities; authorizing bankruptcy 
  1.3             filing; proposing coding for new law in Minnesota 
  1.4             Statutes, chapter 471. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [471.831] [MUNICIPALITY MAY FILE BANKRUPTCY 
  1.7   PETITION.] 
  1.8      Subdivision 1.  [ANY RELIEF UNDER BANKRUPTCY CODE.] A 
  1.9   municipality, as defined in subdivision 2, may file a petition 
  1.10  and seek any relief available to it under United States Code, 
  1.11  title 11, as amended through December 31, 1996. 
  1.12     Subd. 2.  [MUNICIPALITY DEFINED.] In this section, 
  1.13  "municipality" means a municipality as defined in United States 
  1.14  Code, title 11, section 101, as amended through December 31, 
  1.15  1996, but limited to a county, statutory or home rule charter 
  1.16  city, or town; or a housing and redevelopment authority, 
  1.17  economic development authority, or rural development financing 
  1.18  authority established under chapter 469, a home rule charter, or 
  1.19  special law. 
  1.20     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.21     Section 1 is effective the day following its final 
  1.22  enactment.
