  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to commerce; prohibiting the printing of full 
  1.3             credit card numbers on sales receipts; proposing 
  1.4             coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 325F.
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [325F.983] [CREDIT CARD RECEIPTS.] 
  1.7      (a) Except as provided in this section, no person that 
  1.8   accepts credit cards for the transaction of business shall print 
  1.9   more than the last five digits of the credit card account number 
  1.10  or the expiration date upon any receipt provided to the 
  1.11  cardholder. 
  1.12     (b) This section applies only to receipts that are 
  1.13  electronically printed and does not apply to transactions in 
  1.14  which the sole means of recording the person's credit card 
  1.15  number is by handwriting or by an imprint or copy of the credit 
  1.16  card. 
  1.17     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE; APPLICATION.] 
  1.18     This section is effective January 1, 2004, with respect to 
  1.19  any receipt printed using a cash register or other machine or 
  1.20  device that is first put into use on or after January 1, 2004. 
  1.21     This section is effective January 1, 2006, with respect to 
  1.22  any receipt printed using a cash register or other machine or 
  1.23  device that is in use before January 1, 2004.
