  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to juveniles; requiring peace officers to 
  1.3             notify the parents of a juvenile who is alleged to 
  1.4             have committed an adult court traffic offense; 
  1.5             amending Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 260.193, 
  1.6             subdivision 3. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 260.193, 
  1.9   subdivision 3, is amended to read: 
  1.10     Subd. 3.  Except as provided in subdivision 4, a child who 
  1.11  commits an adult court traffic offense and at the time of the 
  1.12  offense was at least 16 years old shall be subject to the laws 
  1.13  and court procedures controlling adult traffic violators and 
  1.14  shall not be under the jurisdiction of the juvenile court.  When 
  1.15  a child is alleged to have committed an adult court traffic 
  1.16  offense and is at least 16 years old at the time of the offense, 
  1.17  the peace officer making the charge shall follow the arrest 
  1.18  procedures prescribed in section 169.91 and also shall make 
  1.19  reasonable effort to notify the child's parent or guardian of 
  1.20  the nature of the charge.
