  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to public safety; appropriating money for 
  1.3             National Weather Service transmitters. 
  1.4   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.5      Section 1.  [APPROPRIATIONS; NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE 
  1.6   TRANSMITTERS.] 
  1.7      $2,090,000 is appropriated in fiscal year 2000 from the 
  1.8   general fund to the commissioner of public safety to purchase up 
  1.9   to 33 National Weather Service transmitters to be distributed 
  1.10  across Minnesota to provide full coverage of weather emergencies 
  1.11  and to pay for engineering fees (1) to determine the most 
  1.12  appropriate locations for the transmitters, antennas, and 
  1.13  related equipment, (2) to determine the viability of the towers 
  1.14  to accommodate the additional equipment, and (3) to identify and 
  1.15  implement alternative sites, if necessary.  Operational 
  1.16  maintenance of the transmitters will be the responsibility of 
  1.17  the National Weather Service as defined by a written agreement 
  1.18  between the Minnesota department of administration and the 
  1.19  United States Department of Commerce.
