  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to the legislature; providing for its size in 
  1.3             2003 and thereafter; amending Minnesota Statutes 1994, 
  1.4             sections 2.021; and 2.031, subdivision 1. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 2.021, is 
  1.7   amended to read: 
  1.8      2.021 [NUMBER OF MEMBERS.] 
  1.9      For each legislature, until a new apportionment shall have 
  1.10  been made, the senate is composed of 67 64 members and the house 
  1.11  of representatives is composed of 134 128 members, or the 
  1.12  numbers nearest to 64 and 128 that are evenly divisible by the 
  1.13  number of members of the United States house of representatives 
  1.14  apportioned to the state. 
  1.15     Sec. 2.  Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 2.031, 
  1.16  subdivision 1, is amended to read: 
  1.17     Subdivision 1.  [LEGISLATIVE DISTRICTS.] The 
  1.18  representatives in the senate and house of representatives are 
  1.19  apportioned throughout the state in 67 senate districts and 134 
  1.20  house districts the number of senate and house districts 
  1.21  provided by section 2.021.  No congressional district boundary 
  1.22  may be crossed in forming a senate district.  Each senate 
  1.23  district is entitled to elect one senator and each house 
  1.24  district is entitled to elect one representative. 
  1.25     Sec. 3.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  2.1      This act is effective for any apportionment to be effective 
  2.2   in 2003 or thereafter.
