  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; providing for the opportunity 
  1.3             for international study for foreign language teachers; 
  1.4             requesting an emphasis on international education; 
  1.5             proposing coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, 
  1.6             chapter 122A. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  [122A.67] [FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHERS; 
  1.9   INTERNATIONAL STUDY.] 
  1.10     All colleges and universities approved by the board of 
  1.11  teaching to prepare persons for teacher licensure to provide 
  1.12  direct instruction of a foreign language must offer in their 
  1.13  teacher preparation program an opportunity for persons in the 
  1.14  program preparing to teach a foreign language to live, for at 
  1.15  least one academic year, in a foreign country that has the 
  1.16  person's foreign language specialty as a first language to study 
  1.17  that country's language and culture. 
  1.18     Sec. 2.  [INTERNATIONAL EDUCATION.] 
  1.19     The legislature recognizes international education as a way 
  1.20  to increase student awareness of issues of cultural diversity 
  1.21  and of the interdependence of nations in the modern world and 
  1.22  therefore requests the department of children, families, and 
  1.23  learning and the post-secondary institutions to establish and 
  1.24  emphasize international education.
