  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to motor vehicles; providing for issuance of 
  1.3             World War II veterans license plates with symbols 
  1.4             showing the highest decoration awarded; amending 
  1.5             Minnesota Statutes 2000, sections 168.123, by adding a 
  1.6             subdivision; and 168.1291, subdivision 1.  
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 168.123, is 
  1.9   amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.10     Subd. 2a.  [WORLD WAR II PLATES; DECORATIONS.] (a) A person 
  1.11  who qualifies for a World War II veterans license plate under 
  1.12  subdivision 2, paragraph (c), may have the plate designed so 
  1.13  that it bears a symbol indicative of the highest decoration the 
  1.14  person received during active service during World War II, other 
  1.15  than the Congressional Medal of Honor or the Purple Heart.  The 
  1.16  commissioner of veterans affairs shall design appropriate 
  1.17  symbols to implement this subdivision, and shall prescribe the 
  1.18  necessary authentication to be submitted by each applicant for 
  1.19  license plates under this subdivision. 
  1.20     (b) The commissioner of public safety shall set a fee for 
  1.21  each set of license plates issued under this subdivision in an 
  1.22  amount sufficient to cover the cost of the license plates.  The 
  1.23  fee under this paragraph is payable only in years in which the 
  1.24  plates are issued, and is in lieu of the $10 fee required under 
  1.25  subdivision 1, paragraph (b). 
  1.26     (c) All provisions of this section not inconsistent with 
  2.1   this subdivision apply to license plates issued under this 
  2.2   subdivision. 
  2.3      Sec. 2.  Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 168.1291, 
  2.4   subdivision 1, is amended to read: 
  2.5      Subdivision 1.  [DEFINITION.] For purposes of this section 
  2.6   "special license plates" means license plates issued under 
  2.7   sections 168.12, subdivisions 2b to 2e; 168.123, other than 
  2.8   subdivision 2a; 168.1235; and 168.129.
