  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to insurance; prohibiting insurers from 
  1.3             charging membership fees or dues; amending Minnesota 
  1.4             Statutes 2002, section 72A.20, by adding a subdivision.
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2002, section 72A.20, is 
  1.7   amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.8      Subd. 37.  [MEMBERSHIP FEES PROHIBITED.] No insurer may 
  1.9   charge a membership fee or dues to an applicant or insured as a 
  1.10  condition of obtaining or retaining insurance coverage.  This 
  1.11  subdivision does not prohibit membership fees or dues charged to 
  1.12  its members by a membership organization through which members 
  1.13  obtain insurance coverage, if the membership organization has a 
  1.14  purpose other than providing insurance.
