                         Laws of Minnesota 1992 

                       RESOLUTION 9-H.F.No. 1652 
 A resolution memorializing the Postmaster General to 
issue a postal stamp in commemoration of Wanda Gag, 
American Author and Illustrator. 
    WHEREAS, Wanda Gag was born March 11, 1893, in New Ulm, 
Minnesota, to Anton and Lissi Gag; and 
    WHEREAS, she drew and painted constantly in high school and 
her work was published in magazines and newspapers; and 
    WHEREAS, her efforts rewarded, Wanda Gag was enabled to 
study art in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and New York; and 
    WHEREAS, leaving a career in fashion and commercial art, 
Wanda Gag moved to the countryside to pursue painting the 
plants, hills, machinery, and buildings around her; and 
    WHEREAS, a one-woman art show held in 1926, the first of 
four sponsored by the Weyhe Gallery of New York, increased her 
artistic reputation; and 
    WHEREAS, her prints, drawings, and water colors are still 
found in major museums and libraries of the United States and 
elsewhere, including the British Museum, the Bibliotheque 
Nationale in Paris, and the Pushkin Museum in Moscow; and 
    WHEREAS, Wanda Gag was a pioneer in the development of 
children's literature; and 
    WHEREAS, her first children's book, Millions of Cats, was 
selected as a runner-up in 1928 for the American Library 
Association's Newbery Medal and has been translated into more 
than eight languages; and 
    WHEREAS, designated the first great American picture book 
artist-author, her literary accomplishments consist of ten books 
for children, as well as one published set of diary entries and 
drawings entitled Growing Pains; and 
    WHEREAS, in 1974, Charles Scribner's Sons included an 
article on Wanda Gag in a supplement to the Dictionary of 
American Biography; and 
    WHEREAS, Wanda Gag made a unique and lasting contribution 
to American children's literature that is as appealing to adults 
as to children; NOW, THEREFORE, 
    BE IT RESOLVED by the Legislature of the State of Minnesota 
that it petitions the Postmaster General to issue a postal stamp 
commemorating Wanda Gag, American Author and Illustrator. 
    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of State of the 
State of Minnesota is directed to prepare certified copies of 
this memorial and transmit them to the Postmaster General and to 
each member of the Citizens Stamp Advisory Committee.
