  1.1                             A resolution
  1.2             concerning the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.
  1.3      
  1.4      WHEREAS, the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, were 
  1.5   a deliberate and direct attack on the people of the United 
  1.6   States of America and the freedom and liberty that are the basis 
  1.7   of our democratic society; and 
  1.8      WHEREAS, the massive loss of life from that fateful day has 
  1.9   taken an immense toll on and touched the lives of all Americans 
  1.10  and freedom-loving peoples of the world; and 
  1.11     WHEREAS, American men and women serving in the U.S. Armed 
  1.12  Forces continue the fight against terrorism in Afghanistan and 
  1.13  around the world, including the Minnesota Air National Guard 
  1.14  133rd Airlift Wing, which shipped out on January 28; and 
  1.15     WHEREAS, from the very first moments of the attack, 
  1.16  firefighters and emergency medical service personnel were on the 
  1.17  scene, risking their lives to save their fellow citizens and not 
  1.18  leaving until all survivors were retrieved; and 
  1.19     WHEREAS, our law enforcement officers in New York City, 
  1.20  Northern Virginia, and across the country have risen to the 
  1.21  challenge of saving lives in time of terror and protecting the 
  1.22  security of our communities in times of peace; and 
  1.23     WHEREAS, personnel who work in the airline industry and in 
  1.24  our airports have been unwavering in their determination to 
  2.1   protect the safety of air travel and strengthen that industry 
  2.2   after September 11; and 
  2.3      WHEREAS, the men and women who work in the United States 
  2.4   Postal Service have seen their important work challenged by acts 
  2.5   of terrorism that impact their lives and health; and 
  2.6      WHEREAS, the people of Minnesota have gathered together in 
  2.7   their homes, places of worship, and public places to pray and 
  2.8   express their sympathy and support for their fellow American 
  2.9   citizens and our national leaders in this time of war; NOW, 
  2.10  THEREFORE, 
  2.11     BE IT RESOLVED by the Legislature of the State of Minnesota 
  2.12  that it desires to express to the President of the United States 
  2.13  and to Congress these sentiments: 
  2.14     It extends its deepest sympathies to the people of New York 
  2.15  City, Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia, and to the many 
  2.16  families in Minnesota and all across the country whose loved 
  2.17  ones lost their lives on September 11, 2001; 
  2.18     It extends its most profound appreciation to the thousands 
  2.19  of rescue workers, health care professionals, investigators, 
  2.20  clergy, and volunteers who work to reconnect families, identify 
  2.21  those who have been lost, treat those who are injured, comfort 
  2.22  those in need, and find those who are guilty of perpetrating 
  2.23  this attack on our country; 
  2.24     It acknowledges the sacrifice and determination of the men 
  2.25  and women serving the United States in the Army, Navy, Air 
  2.26  Force, Marines, Coast Guard, Central Intelligence Agency, 
  2.27  Federal Bureau of Investigation, and all of those who work at 
  2.28  home and abroad to defeat terrorism, protect our country, and 
  2.29  bring freedom to oppressed peoples of the world; 
  2.30     It pledges its continued support to our law enforcement 
  2.31  officers, firefighters and rescue workers, airline personnel, 
  2.32  airport security personnel, postal workers, and all of those who 
  2.33  work to maintain the security and integrity of our homeland 
  2.34  security and way of life; and finally 
  2.35     It pledges its unwavering support to the President and the 
  2.36  Congress in their response to this tragedy and stands ready to 
  3.1   assist in any way it can. 
  3.2      BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of State of the 
  3.3   State of Minnesota is directed to prepare copies of this 
  3.4   memorial and transmit them to the President of the United 
  3.5   States, the Clerk of the United States House of Representatives, 
  3.6   and the President and Secretary of the United States Senate.
