A bill for an act
relating to state and local government; prohibiting certain place names; proposing
coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 1.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

The state and any political subdivision of the state must
not use any of the following to name public places or places owned or controlled by the
state or a political subdivision, including buildings, streets, lakes, rivers, or parks:

(1) Dight; and

(2) Squaw.

If a name prohibited under this section is in use on the effective
date of this section the state or political subdivision must rename the place within one
year of the effective date of this section. The prohibited name may continue to be used
for up to ... years after the new name is adopted in order to mitigate the costs that may
be incurred in adapting to the new name.
