A bill for an act
relating to education; requiring education on homelessness prevention and life
skills; proposing coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 120B.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1.

new text begin [120B.237] HOMELESSNESS PREVENTION AND LIFE SKILLS
EDUCATION.

new text begin (a) A school district must provide homelessness prevention and life skills education to
students as part of the grades 6 through 8 curriculum. The school district may determine
the appropriate grade level for the instruction provided under this section.

new text begin (b) Homelessness prevention and life skills education may include information and skills
on completing required education, preparing for a career or college by the end of high
school, securing a job, managing finances, starting a savings account, knowing where to go
for help if homeless, and understanding what resources are available for additional education
or homelessness assistance. The district may develop a flyer that includes information on
homelessness resources, where to go for help if homeless, local food shelf locations, homeless
shelters, transportation options, and human resources information. The district is encouraged
to make the same information available in the school counselor's office and the school
nurse's office.

organizations dedicated to preventing homelessness or ensuring that the immediate needs
of students experiencing homelessness are met.
