A bill for an act
relating to transportation; prohibiting automated speed enforcement; amending
Minnesota Statutes 2020, section 169.14, by adding a subdivision.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1.

Minnesota Statutes 2020, section 169.14, is amended by adding a subdivision
to read:

new text begin (a) For purposes of this subdivision, "automated
speed enforcement system" means an electronic system of one or more cameras or other
motor vehicle sensors that is designed to automatically produce recorded images of a motor
vehicle operated in violation of the speed limit.

new text begin (b) The commissioners of transportation and public safety and a local authority are
prohibited from implementing an automated speed enforcement system or a program that
authorizes a peace officer to issue a citation based on detection of a speed violation through
the use of an automated traffic law enforcement system.
