A bill for an act
relating to education; modifying board requirements for the Minnesota State
Academies; amending Minnesota Statutes 2018, section 125A.62, subdivision 1.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:
Section 1.
Minnesota Statutes 2018, section 125A.62, subdivision 1, is amended to read:
Subdivision 1.
Governance.

govern the State Academy for the Deaf and the State Academy for the Blind. The board
must promote academic standards based on high expectation and an assessment system to
measure academic performance toward the achievement of those standards. The board must

support deaf, deafblind, hard-of-hearing, blind, and visually impaired students statewidenew text end .

(1) one present or former superintendent of an independent school district;

(2) one present or former special education director;

(3) the commissioner of education or the commissioner's designee;

(4) one member of the blind community;

(5) one member of the deaf community;

(6) two members of the general public with business, administrative, or financial
expertise;

(1) the Department of Education specialist for blind and visually impaired students and
the department specialist for deaf and hard-of-hearing students, both of whom are nonvoting,
unpaid, ex officio members;

(2) seven nonrelated members of the community who:

(i) reside in Minnesota;
new text end
new text begin
(ii) are not employed by the Minnesota State Academies;
new text end
new text begin
(iii) do not have a child enrolled in the school; and

(iv) are deaf, deafblind, visually impaired, or have expertise in deaf or blind culture and
education;

(3) two parents or legal guardians, not employed by the school, who have a student
currently enrolled in the school;
