A bill for an act
relating to health occupations; modifying continuing education requirements;
appropriating money; amending Minnesota Statutes 2018, section 214.12, by
adding a subdivision.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1.

Minnesota Statutes 2018, section 214.12, is amended by adding a subdivision
to read:

new text begin Benzodiazepine prescribing. new text end

new text begin The Board of Medical Practice, the Board of
Nursing, and the Board of Dentistry must require that licensees with the authority to prescribe
controlled substances obtain at least two hours of continuing education credit on best practices
in prescribing drugs classified as benzodiazepines. Continuing education must emphasize
prescribing benzodiazepines for short-term treatment and include training on tapering and
discontinuing benzodiazepine use. Continuing education required under this section must
meet board requirements. All new licensees must complete the required continuing education
within one year of initial licensure. All current licensees must complete the required
continuing education before January 1, 2022.

fund to the Board of Medical Practice for costs associated with continuing education on
prescribing benzodiazepines. This is a onetime appropriation.
