  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; giving statewide recognition to 
  1.3             a highly qualified paraprofessional who meets a 
  1.4             state-approved local assessment; amending Minnesota 
  1.5             Statutes 2003 Supplement, section 120B.363, by adding 
  1.6             a subdivision. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2003 Supplement, section 
  1.9   120B.363, is amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.10     Subd. 4.  [STATEWIDE RECOGNITION OF LOCAL ASSESSMENTS TO 
  1.11  DETERMINE HIGHLY QUALIFIED PARAPROFESSIONALS.] A person who 
  1.12  works as a paraprofessional in a local school district after 
  1.13  meeting a state-approved local assessment, consistent with 
  1.14  subdivision 1, is considered to be a highly qualified 
  1.15  paraprofessional for any subsequent paraprofessional position 
  1.16  the person holds in a Minnesota school district. 
  1.17     [EFFECTIVE DATE.] This section is effective for the 
  1.18  2004-2005 school year and later.
