1.1 A bill for an act 1.2 relating to waste management; requiring the 1.3 manufacturer of a smoke detector battery containing 1.4 radioactive material to provide for the safe disposal 1.5 of that battery; amending Minnesota Statutes 2000, 1.6 section 115A.9155, subdivision 1. 1.7 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 1.8 Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 115A.9155, 1.9 subdivision 1, is amended to read: 1.10 Subdivision 1. [PROHIBITION.] A person may not place in 1.11 mixed municipal solid waste: 1.12 (1) a dry cell battery containing mercuric oxide electrode, 1.13 silver oxide electrode, nickel-cadmium, or sealed lead-acid that 1.14 was purchased for use or used by a government agency, or an 1.15 industrial, communications, or medical facility; or 1.16 (2) a smoke detector battery containing americium 241 or 1.17 other radioactive material.
