  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; determining the number of 
  1.3             Minnesota school children diagnosed with attention 
  1.4             deficit disorder or attention deficit hyperactivity 
  1.5             disorder currently taking amphetamine prescription 
  1.6             drugs; appropriating money. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  [STUDY; APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.9      $40,000 is appropriated from the general fund in fiscal 
  1.10  year 2001 to the commissioner of children, families, and 
  1.11  learning for the purpose of contracting with a qualified expert 
  1.12  to determine and report the number and overall incidence rate of 
  1.13  Minnesota school children, by age, grade level, gender, and 
  1.14  race, diagnosed with attention deficit disorder (ADD) or 
  1.15  attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) currently taking 
  1.16  amphetamine prescription drugs such as Ritalin.  In preparing 
  1.17  the report, the contractor also must determine the number and 
  1.18  overall incidence rate of students not identified with ADD or 
  1.19  ADHD currently taking amphetamine prescription drugs such as 
  1.20  Ritalin.  The commissioner must submit the report to the 
  1.21  education committees of the legislature by February 15, 2001. 
  1.22     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.23     Section 1 is effective July 1, 2000.
