A bill for an act
relating to public safety; amending the penalty for false reporting of a crime;
amending Minnesota Statutes 2008, section 609.505, subdivision 1.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:
Minnesota Statutes 2008, section 609.505, subdivision 1, is amended to read:
Whoever informs a law enforcement officer that a
crime has been committed or otherwise provides information to an on-duty peace officer,
knowing that the person is a peace officer, regarding the conduct of others, knowing
that it is false and intending that the officer shall act in reliance upon it, is guilty of a

is guilty of a gross misdemeanor.deleted text end new text begin crime and may be sentenced as follows:

(1) if the report is a false report of a misdemeanor, the person is guilty of a
misdemeanor;

(2) if the report is a false report of a gross misdemeanor, the person is guilty of a
gross misdemeanor; and

(3) if the report is a false report of a felony, the person is guilty of a felony and may
be sentenced to imprisonment for not more than five years or to payment of a fine of
not more than $10,000, or both.

This section is effective August 1, 2010, and applies to crimes
committed on or after that date.
