1.1 A bill for an act 1.2 relating to crime prevention; increasing the penalty 1.3 for a violation of the predatory registration law; 1.4 amending Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 243.166, 1.5 subdivision 5. 1.6 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 1.7 Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 243.166, 1.8 subdivision 5, is amended to read: 1.9 Subd. 5. [CRIMINAL PENALTY.] A person required to register 1.10 under this section who knowingly violates any of its provisions 1.11 or intentionally provides false information to a corrections 1.12 agent, law enforcement authority, or the bureau of criminal 1.13 apprehension is guilty of agross misdemeanorfelony and may be 1.14 sentenced to imprisonment for not more than two years or to 1.15 payment of a fine of not more than $4,000, or both. A person 1.16 convicted of or adjudicated delinquent for violating this 1.17 section who previously has been convicted under this section is 1.18 guilty of a felony and may be sentenced to imprisonment for not 1.19 more than five years or to payment of a fine of not more than 1.20 $10,000, or both. 1.21 Sec. 2. [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 1.22 Section 1 is effective January 1, 2001, and applies to 1.23 crimes committed on or after that date.
