A bill for an act
relating to employment; requiring outreach to Minnesota workers on the availability
of short-term disability insurance.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

(a) The commissioner of employment and economic development shall conduct outreach
to Minnesota workers to communicate the availability of purchasing short-term disability
insurance in the private insurance market as a means to be paid a portion of a salary if a
worker cannot work because of a disabling illness, injury, or pregnancy.

(b) In conducting the outreach, the commissioner must:

(1) develop materials communicating that short-term disability insurance:

new text begin
(i) pays a portion of a salary if a worker cannot work because of the worker's disabling
illness, injury, or pregnancy; and

(ii) is not a government benefit, and is not connected to any public benefit program, but
is private insurance coverage that a worker purchases through a private insurance company;

(2) develop and make available publicly on the department's website:

new text begin
(i) a list of short-term disability insurance providers offering policies to Minnesota
workers in the private market; and

new text begin
(ii) a list of agents licensed to sell short-term disability insurance in Minnesota; and

(3) provide a telephone number and contact for assistance about other sources of
information on short-term disability insurance.
