  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to local government; allowing statutory 
  1.3             cities to provide for election of council members from 
  1.4             wards; amending Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 
  1.5             412.02, by adding a subdivision. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 412.02, is 
  1.8   amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 7.  [ELECTION BY WARDS.] A city council may provide 
  1.10  by ordinance for the election of city council members by wards, 
  1.11  or for the election of some city council members from wards and 
  1.12  of some members at-large.  The ordinance may also provide for 
  1.13  staggering of terms.  The ordinance takes effect only if 
  1.14  approved by a majority of the voters of the city voting on the 
  1.15  question at a general or special election.  Minnesota election 
  1.16  law, including Minnesota Statutes, sections 204B.135 and 205.84, 
  1.17  relating to wards, applies to this subdivision.
