  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to retirement; extending pension coverage to 
  1.3             part-time metropolitan transit police officers; 
  1.4             amending Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 353.64, 
  1.5             subdivision 7a. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 353.64, 
  1.8   subdivision 7a, is amended to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 7a.  [PENSION COVERAGE FOR CERTAIN METROPOLITAN 
  1.10  TRANSIT POLICE OFFICERS.] A person who is employed as a 
  1.11  full-time police officer on or after the first day of the first 
  1.12  payroll period after July 1, 1993, by the metropolitan council 
  1.13  and who is not eligible for coverage under the agreement with 
  1.14  the Secretary of the federal Department of Health and Human 
  1.15  Services making the provisions of the federal Old Age, 
  1.16  Survivors, and Disability Insurance Act because the person's 
  1.17  position is excluded from application under United States Code, 
  1.18  sections 418(d)(5)(A) and 418(d)(8)(D), and under section 
  1.19  355.07, is a member of the public employees police and fire fund 
  1.20  and is considered to be a police officer within the meaning of 
  1.21  this section.  The metropolitan council shall deduct the 
  1.22  employee contribution from the salary of each full-time police 
  1.23  officer as required by section 353.65, subdivision 2, shall make 
  1.24  the employer contribution for each full-time police officer as 
  1.25  required by section 353.65, subdivision 3, and shall meet the 
  2.1   employer recording and reporting requirements in section 353.65, 
  2.2   subdivision 4. 
  2.3      Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  2.4      Section 1 is effective July 1, 2001, and applies to 
  2.5   salaries earned by part-time metropolitan transit police 
  2.6   officers after June 30, 2001.
