  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to environment; prohibiting state purchase of 
  1.3             wood treated with arsenic; appropriating money; 
  1.4             proposing coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, 
  1.5             chapter 16C.  
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  [16C.26] [WOOD TREATED WITH ARSENIC; 
  1.8   PROHIBITION.] 
  1.9      No agency may purchase wood treated with arsenic, inorganic 
  1.10  arsenic, or an arsenic copper combination such as chromated 
  1.11  copper arsenate wood preservative fungicide, or any product 
  1.12  containing wood that has been treated with one of those 
  1.13  substances. 
  1.14     Sec. 2.  [APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.15     $250,000 is appropriated to the director of the office of 
  1.16  environmental assistance for grants to Minnesota corporations 
  1.17  that commit to convert their wood treatment operations from 
  1.18  treating wood with chromated copper arsenate wood preservative 
  1.19  to a wood preservative that does not contain arsenic.  The 
  1.20  grants shall be used to offset the costs associated with the 
  1.21  conversion, including equipment changes, labor costs, and cost 
  1.22  associated with cleanup. 
  1.23     Sec. 3.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.24     Section 1 is effective on January 1, 2004.
