  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; providing for grants for 
  1.3             supplemental literacy programs; appropriating money. 
  1.4   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.5      Section 1.  [SUPPLEMENTAL LITERACY PROGRAMS.] 
  1.6      $1,000,000 in fiscal year 2000 is appropriated from the 
  1.7   general fund to the commissioner of children, families, and 
  1.8   learning for grants to elementary school sites for supplemental 
  1.9   literacy programs.  The grants must be used to create a stronger 
  1.10  home and school partnership by providing for technology-based 
  1.11  curriculum materials and for equipment and teacher training that 
  1.12  have the effect of extending the learning day and developing 
  1.13  family involvement in student learning.  The commissioner shall 
  1.14  determine the form and manner for grant applications.  
  1.15     This appropriation is available until June 30, 2001.  This 
  1.16  appropriation is one-time only.
