  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to transportation; specifically authorizing 
  1.3             appropriations for road approaches for local bridges 
  1.4             from previous transportation bonding authorization; 
  1.5             amending Laws 1998, chapter 404, section 17, 
  1.6             subdivision 2. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  Laws 1998, chapter 404, section 17, subdivision 
  1.9   2, is amended to read: 
  1.10  Subd. 2.  Local Bridge
  1.11  Replacement and Rehabilitation                       34,000,000
  1.12  This appropriation is from the state 
  1.13  transportation fund as provided in 
  1.14  Minnesota Statutes, section 174.50, to 
  1.15  match federal funds and to replace or 
  1.16  rehabilitate local deficient bridges. 
  1.17  Political subdivisions may use grants 
  1.18  made under this section to construct or 
  1.19  reconstruct bridges, including: 
  1.20  (1) matching federal-aid grants to 
  1.21  construct or reconstruct key bridges; 
  1.22  (2) paying the costs of preliminary 
  1.23  engineering and environmental studies 
  1.24  authorized under Minnesota Statutes, 
  1.25  section 174.50, subdivision 6a; 
  1.26  (3) paying the costs to abandon an 
  1.27  existing bridge that is deficient and 
  1.28  in need of replacement, but where no 
  1.29  replacement will be made; and 
  1.30  (4) paying the costs to construct a 
  1.31  road or street to facilitate the 
  1.32  abandonment of an existing bridge 
  1.33  determined by the commissioner to be 
  1.34  deficient, if the commissioner 
  1.35  determines that construction of the 
  1.36  road or street is more cost efficient 
  2.1   than the replacement of the existing 
  2.2   bridge; and 
  2.3   (5) paying the costs to construct, 
  2.4   replace, or reconstruct a road or 
  2.5   street approach to a bridge being 
  2.6   rehabilitated, replaced, constructed, 
  2.7   or reconstructed pursuant to this 
  2.8   subdivision. 
  2.9      Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  2.10     Section 1 is effective the day following final enactment.
