  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; exempting an incumbent regent 
  1.3             of the University of Minnesota from evaluation by the 
  1.4             regent candidate advisory council; amending Minnesota 
  1.5             Statutes 1998, section 137.0245, subdivision 3. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 137.0245, 
  1.8   subdivision 3, is amended to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 3.  [DUTIES.] The advisory council shall: 
  1.10     (1) develop, in consultation with current and former 
  1.11  regents and the administration of the University of Minnesota, a 
  1.12  statement of the selection criteria to be applied and a 
  1.13  description of the responsibilities and duties of a regent, and 
  1.14  shall distribute this to potential candidates; and 
  1.15     (2) for each position on the board, identify and recruit 
  1.16  qualified candidates for the board of regents, based on the 
  1.17  background and experience of the candidates, and their potential 
  1.18  for discharging the responsibilities of a member of the board of 
  1.19  regents. 
  1.20     An incumbent regent, who has previously been identified as 
  1.21  a qualified candidate by the advisory council and who is a 
  1.22  present candidate for reelection, is considered to be 
  1.23  recommended by the advisory council.
