  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to transportation; appropriating money for 
  1.3             planning and design of personal rapid transit. 
  1.4   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.5      Section 1.  [PERSONAL RAPID TRANSIT.] 
  1.6      Subdivision 1.  [DEFINITION.] For purposes of this section, 
  1.7   "personal rapid transit" means a system of small automated 
  1.8   vehicles running on demand, on narrow elevated guideways, 
  1.9   offering individuals direct nonstop trips. 
  1.10     Subd. 2.  [APPROPRIATION.] $........ is appropriated in 
  1.11  fiscal year 2000 from the general fund to the commissioner of 
  1.12  transportation for the planning and design of a personal rapid 
  1.13  transit system in Minnesota.  The commissioner shall: 
  1.14     (1) determine the most promising first application of 
  1.15  personal rapid transit by soliciting interest by municipalities 
  1.16  in such an application; 
  1.17     (2) determine line and station locations, ridership, costs, 
  1.18  and benefit-cost ratio; 
  1.19     (3) evaluate public opinion about the visual impact of the 
  1.20  system; 
  1.21     (4) investigate all institutional, political, social, and 
  1.22  environmental issues involved in the deployment of personal 
  1.23  rapid transit; and 
  1.24     (5) develop a plan for implementing personal rapid transit, 
  2.1   including financing for construction of the system.
