  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to peace officers; authorizing permits for 
  1.3             retired peace officers to carry pistols; amending 
  1.4             Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 624.714, by adding a 
  1.5             subdivision. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 624.714, is 
  1.8   amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 14.  [RETIRED PEACE OFFICERS; PERMITS.] (a) Upon 
  1.10  retiring, a peace officer licensed under sections 626.84 to 
  1.11  626.863 may apply for a permit to carry under this subdivision.  
  1.12  The application shall set forth in writing: 
  1.13     (1) the name, residence, telephone number, and driver's 
  1.14  license number or nonqualification certificate number, if any, 
  1.15  or the applicant; 
  1.16     (2) the sex, date of birth, height, weight, and color of 
  1.17  eyes and hair, and distinguishing physical characteristics, if 
  1.18  any, of the applicant; 
  1.19     (3) evidence of licensure as a peace officer in Minnesota 
  1.20  prior to retiring; and 
  1.21     (4) evidence of the applicant's retirement status. 
  1.22     (b) Applications should be submitted to the issuing 
  1.23  authorities specified in subdivision 2.  The issuing authority 
  1.24  must issue the permit upon receiving the information specified 
  1.25  in paragraph (a). 
  2.1      (c) Permits to carry for retired peace officers must 
  2.2   contain the information required by paragraph (a).  No fee shall 
  2.3   be required for the card. 
  2.4      (d) A permit to carry issued under this subdivision shall 
  2.5   expire after five years and may be renewed in the same manner 
  2.6   and subject to the same conditions by which the original permit 
  2.7   was obtained, except that the person applying for renewal also 
  2.8   must submit evidence of completion of a firearm safety or 
  2.9   training class.
