  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to railroads; appropriating money for a study 
  1.3             of restoring and extending Amtrak rail passenger 
  1.4             service connecting the Twin Cities, Duluth, and the 
  1.5             Iron Range. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  [PASSENGER RAIL SERVICE STUDY; APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.8      $100,000 is appropriated from the general fund to the 
  1.9   commissioner of transportation in fiscal year 2000 for a study 
  1.10  of restoring and extending Amtrak rail passenger service to 
  1.11  connect the Twin Cities, Duluth, and the Iron Range.  The study 
  1.12  must include, among other things: 
  1.13     (1) the feasibility and desirability of providing the 
  1.14  service, including connecting the service with potential 
  1.15  commuter rail routes identified by the commissioner; 
  1.16     (2) anticipated operating costs, and capital costs if any; 
  1.17  and 
  1.18     (3) projected ridership of the service. 
  1.19  The commissioner shall report to the governor and legislature on 
  1.20  the results of the study not later than February 1, 2000.
