  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; providing for substitute 
  1.3             teacher state-paid medical benefits; appropriating 
  1.4             money; proposing coding for new law in Minnesota 
  1.5             Statutes, chapter 122A. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  [122A.441] [SUBSTITUTE TEACHER STATE-PAID 
  1.8   MEDICAL BENEFITS.] 
  1.9      Notwithstanding section 43A.24, a substitute teacher that 
  1.10  teaches at least 120 days during the previous school year is 
  1.11  eligible for state-paid medical benefits beginning the July 1 
  1.12  following the end of the school year.  A substitute teacher must 
  1.13  retain state-paid medical benefits as long as the teacher 
  1.14  continues to teach for at least 120 days each following school 
  1.15  year. 
  1.16     Sec. 2.  [APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.17     $....... in fiscal year 2000 and $....... in fiscal year 
  1.18  2001 is appropriated from the general fund to the department of 
  1.19  children, families, and learning for substitute teacher 
  1.20  state-paid medical benefits. 
  1.21     Sec. 3.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.22     Section 1 is effective beginning July 1, 1999, for 
  1.23  substitute teachers teaching during the 1998-1999 school year 
  1.24  and thereafter.
