  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to transportation; appropriating money to 
  1.3             metropolitan council for demonstration project 
  1.4             providing express bus service between downtown 
  1.5             Minneapolis and locations outside transit taxing 
  1.6             district.  
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  [APPROPRIATION; EXPRESS BUS DEMONSTRATION 
  1.9   PROJECT.] 
  1.10     (a) $1,200,000 is appropriated from the general fund to the 
  1.11  metropolitan council for the purpose of establishing and 
  1.12  operating an express bus demonstration project that provides 
  1.13  express bus service to downtown Minneapolis from one or more 
  1.14  cities located outside the transit taxing district as defined in 
  1.15  Minnesota Statutes, section 473.446, subdivision 2. 
  1.16     (b) The metropolitan council shall: 
  1.17     (1) acquire or lease the vehicles used to provide the 
  1.18  service; 
  1.19     (2) provide the service or contract with a public or 
  1.20  private transit provider to provide the service; and 
  1.21     (3) if necessary, acquire one or more park-and-ride 
  1.22  facilities related to the service. 
  1.23     (c) This appropriation is available until June 30, 2003. 
  1.24     (d) This appropriation may not be used for express bus 
  1.25  service in a corridor that the council has identified as a 
  1.26  future corridor for commuter rail or light rail transit. 
  2.1      Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  2.2      Section 1 is effective July 1, 2001.
