  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to motor vehicles; requiring commercial 
  1.3             vehicles to display red strobe lamp at rear of 
  1.4             projecting load; amending Minnesota Statutes 1998, 
  1.5             section 169.52. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 169.52, is 
  1.8   amended to read: 
  1.9      169.52 [PROJECTING LOAD; LIGHT OR FLAG.] 
  1.10     Subdivision 1.  [COMMERCIAL VEHICLES.] When the load upon 
  1.11  any motor vehicle or motor-drawn vehicle used for the 
  1.12  transportation of property for compensation extends to the rear 
  1.13  four feet or more beyond the bed or body of the vehicle, there 
  1.14  shall be displayed at the extreme rear end of the load, at all 
  1.15  times, a 360-degree flashing strobe lamp that emits a red light 
  1.16  and meets the safety requirements of section 169.64, subdivision 
  1.17  8, paragraph (c). 
  1.18     Subd. 2.  [OTHER VEHICLES.] When the load upon any other 
  1.19  vehicle extends to the rear four feet or more beyond the bed or 
  1.20  body of such vehicle, there shall be displayed at the extreme 
  1.21  rear end of the load, at the times when lighted lamps on 
  1.22  vehicles are required in this chapter, a red light or lantern 
  1.23  plainly visible from a distance of at least 500 feet to the 
  1.24  sides and rear.  The light or lantern required under this 
  1.25  section shall be in addition to the rear light required upon 
  2.1   every vehicle.  At any time when no lights are required there 
  2.2   shall be displayed at the extreme rear end of such load a red, 
  2.3   yellow or orange flag or cloth not less than 16 inches square.  
  2.4      Subd. 3.  [REAR LIGHT.] The light or lantern required under 
  2.5   this section shall be in addition to the rear light required on 
  2.6   every vehicle.
