A bill for an act
relating to arts and cultural heritage; appropriating money for community identity
and cultural heritage grants program.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

HERITAGE GRANTS.

new text begin $1,000,000 in 2018 and $1,000,000 in 2019 are appropriated from the arts and cultural
heritage fund to the board of directors of the Minnesota Humanities Center for a competitive
grants program to award funds to local communities and organizations to preserve, reinforce,
educate about, and expand the identity of the community or neighborhood and empower
people to shape their community's future. The Minnesota Humanities Center shall award
grants to towns, statutory or home rule charter cities of the third or fourth class, or nonprofit
organizations in urban neighborhoods that have proposals that allow the local community
or neighborhood to preserve, educate, and expand the cultural and historical identity of the
neighborhood or community and that allow the local community to help shape their
community's future. The Minnesota Humanities Center may develop additional preferences
and eligibility criteria for grantees, but must allow funding to be used for capacity building,
rent or building costs, and program development and implementation.
