A bill for an act
relating to health; requiring the commissioner of health to conduct research on
the incidence of autism in the Somali population; appropriating money.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1.

new text begin DISPARATE RATES OF AUTISM IN SOMALI CHILDREN;
RESEARCH.

new text begin (a) The commissioner of health, in collaboration with the University of Minnesota,
must implement a research study to investigate the disparate incidence of autism in Somali
children compared with other populations in the state and to identify factors that account
for increased rates of autism in the Somali population in the state.

new text begin (b) By August 1, 2014, the commissioner must report to the legislature as to the
results of the research required in paragraph (a).

Sec. 2. new text begin APPROPRIATION.

new text begin $1,000,000 in fiscal year 2014 is appropriated from the general fund to the
commissioner of health for research required under section 1. This appropriation is
available until expended.
