  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to retirement; coordinated plan of the public 
  1.3             employees retirement system; authorizing a purchase of 
  1.4             prior service credit for out-of-state city employment. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [PERA-COORDINATED RETIREMENT PLAN SERVICE 
  1.7   CREDIT PURCHASE AUTHORIZED.] 
  1.8      (a) Notwithstanding any provision of law to the contrary, 
  1.9   an eligible person described in paragraph (b) is authorized to 
  1.10  purchase allowable service credit from the coordinated plan of 
  1.11  the public employees retirement system for the period described 
  1.12  in paragraph (c) by making a prior service credit purchase 
  1.13  payment required under Minnesota Statutes, section 356.55. 
  1.14     (b) An eligible person is a person who: 
  1.15     (1) is a current employee of the Minneapolis employees 
  1.16  retirement fund and is a current member of the coordinated plan 
  1.17  of the public employees retirement association and an inactive 
  1.18  member of the unclassified retirement plan of the Minnesota 
  1.19  state retirement system; 
  1.20     (2) was born on April 26, 1949; 
  1.21     (3) was employed as an assistant city attorney from April 
  1.22  1988, to March 1989 by the city of Somerville, Massachusetts; 
  1.23     (4) was also employed as the housing director from January 
  1.24  1, 1973, to December 20, 1973, by the city of Waterloo, Iowa. 
  1.25     (c) The allowable service credit purchase is two years. 
  2.1      (d) The eligible person must provide all relevant 
  2.2   documentation of the applicability of the requirements in 
  2.3   paragraph (b) and any other applicable information that the 
  2.4   executive director of the Minnesota state retirement system may 
  2.5   request. 
  2.6      (e) Allowable service credit for the purchase period must 
  2.7   be granted by the coordinated plan of the public employees 
  2.8   retirement fund to the eligible person upon receipt of the prior 
  2.9   service credit purchase payment amount. 
  2.10     (f) The prior service credit purchase authority expires on 
  2.11  July 1, 2002, or on the date of termination of active state 
  2.12  service by the eligible person, whichever occurs earlier. 
  2.13     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  2.14     Section 1 is effective the day following final enactment.
