  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to retirement; authorizing a purchase of 
  1.3             service credit in the Minnesota state retirement 
  1.4             system. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [PURCHASE OF SERVICE CREDIT.] 
  1.7      (a) An eligible person described in paragraph (b) is 
  1.8   entitled to purchase service credit from the Minnesota state 
  1.9   retirement system for a period of time served as a South Dakota 
  1.10  public school teacher from October 1, 1971, to May 30, 1977, and 
  1.11  as a South Dakota college instructor from September 1, 1977, to 
  1.12  May 30, 1980. 
  1.13     (b) An eligible person for purposes of paragraph (a) is a 
  1.14  person who: 
  1.15     (1) was born on December 2, 1945; 
  1.16     (2) served as a publicly employed educator in the state of 
  1.17  South Dakota from October 1, 1971, to May 30, 1980; 
  1.18     (3) is not eligible to receive a South Dakota public 
  1.19  retirement pension; and 
  1.20     (4) is currently employed by the Minnesota department of 
  1.21  transportation. 
  1.22     (c) The prior service credit purchase payment amount is 
  1.23  governed by Minnesota Statutes, section 356.55.  Authority to 
  1.24  purchase service expires on December 30, 2001. 
  1.25     (d) A person purchasing service credit under this section 
  2.1   must provide sufficient documentation of eligibility to the 
  2.2   executive director of the Minnesota state retirement system. 
  2.3      Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  2.4      Section 1 is effective the day following final enactment.
