  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to agriculture; providing mediation and 
  1.3             binding arbitration options for poultry producers; 
  1.4             amending Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 17.701; 
  1.5             proposing coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, 
  1.6             chapter 17. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 17.701, is 
  1.9   amended to read: 
  1.10     17.701 [RULES.] 
  1.11     The commissioner may promulgate rules necessary for the 
  1.12  administration of sections 17.691 to 17.703 17.704 in accordance 
  1.13  with sections 17.691 to 17.703 17.704 and chapter 14.  
  1.14     Sec. 2.  [17.704] [DISPUTE RESOLUTION, ARBITRATION FOR 
  1.15  POULTRY PRODUCERS.] 
  1.16     If a dispute arises between a producer of poultry as 
  1.17  defined in section 31A.02, subdivision 24, and a handler or 
  1.18  contractor, the producer may elect to use the dispute resolution 
  1.19  provisions of sections 17.697 to 17.703 as if the producer were 
  1.20  an association of producers.  Notwithstanding section 17.697, 
  1.21  subdivision 12, upon demand by the producer, binding arbitration 
  1.22  must be used to resolve the dispute.
