  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to public libraries; requiring a hearing 
  1.3             before closing a public library; proposing coding for 
  1.4             new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 134. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [134.071] [HEARING WITH PUBLIC COMMENT BEFORE 
  1.7   CLOSURE.] 
  1.8      (a) Notwithstanding section 134.08 or other general or 
  1.9   special law, or charter provision to the contrary, a public 
  1.10  library or public library branch must not be closed by its 
  1.11  governing body except after a public hearing with opportunity 
  1.12  for public comment. 
  1.13     (b) Paragraph (a) does not apply to the closing of a public 
  1.14  library or public library branch due to scheduled remodeling for 
  1.15  a limited time. 
  1.16     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.17     Section 1 is effective the day after final enactment.
