  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; providing for an environmental 
  1.3             learning grant program for independent school district 
  1.4             Nos. 829, Waseca, and 2835, 
  1.5             Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton; authorizing a grant for 
  1.6             independent school district No. 2835, 
  1.7             Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton; appropriating money. 
  1.8   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.9      Section 1.  [LAKE ELYSIAN STUDY GRANT.] 
  1.10     Subdivision 1.  [PURPOSE.] An environmental learning grant 
  1.11  program is established for students of independent school 
  1.12  district Nos. 829, Waseca, and 2835, 
  1.13  Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton.  The goal of the grant program is 
  1.14  to design and implement a comprehensive study of the Lake 
  1.15  Elysian ecosystem.  The results of the study should lead to a 
  1.16  model for other school districts to use in developing an 
  1.17  integrated model of technology and environmental learning. 
  1.18     Subd. 2.  [COOPERATIVE VENTURE.] The study of the Lake 
  1.19  Elysian area ecology must be a cooperative effort involving 
  1.20  students from the Waseca school district, 
  1.21  Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton school district, employees of the 
  1.22  department of natural resources, students from Minnesota State 
  1.23  University at Mankato, and members of Lake Elysian Watershed 
  1.24  district. 
  1.25     Subd. 3.  [APPROPRIATION.] $....... in fiscal year 2000 is 
  1.26  appropriated from the general fund to the commissioner of 
  2.1   children, families, and learning for a grant to independent 
  2.2   school district No. 2835, Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton. 
  2.3      Subd. 4.  [REPORT.] The Lake Elysian cooperative venture 
  2.4   shall annually report to the commissioner of children, families, 
  2.5   and learning on the findings of the program and on ways to 
  2.6   expand the environmental learning program statewide. 
  2.7      Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  2.8      Section 1 is effective July 1, 1999.
