1.1A resolution
1.2urging the President and the United States Congress to name the Rochester, Minnesota
1.3Veterans Outpatient Clinic in honor of Marine Corporal Charles "Chuck" Lindberg.
1.4WHEREAS, Charles Willard Lindberg was born June 26, 1920, in Grand Forks, North
1.5Dakota; and
1.6WHEREAS, he entered the United States Marine Corps in Spokane, Washington, on
1.7January 8, 1942; and
1.8WHEREAS, while serving in the Pacific in World War II with the 2nd Marine Raider
1.9Battalion and Third Platoon, Company E, 2nd Battalion, 28th Regiment, 5th Marine Division, he,
1.10along with five other Marines, raised the original American Flag on Iwo Jima on February 23,
1.111945; and
1.12WHEREAS, because of other acts of heroism and wounds received during the battle for
1.13Iwo Jima, he was awarded the Silver Star Medal and the Purple Heart Medal; and
1.14WHEREAS, he now resides in Richfield, Minnesota, and is the last survivor of the original
1.15Iwo Jima flag raising; and
1.16WHEREAS, Charles "Chuck" Lindberg continues to serve various veterans groups and
1.17organizations and remains dedicated to their future and to his country; NOW, THEREFORE,
1.18BE IT RESOLVED by the Legislature of the State of Minnesota that it urges the President
1.19and the Congress of the United States to name the Rochester, Minnesota Veterans Outpatient
1.20Clinic the Marine Corporal Charles "Chuck" Lindberg Clinic.
2.1BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of State of the State of Minnesota is
2.2directed to prepare copies of this memorial and transmit them to the President of the United States,
2.3the President and the Secretary of the United States Senate, the Speaker and the Clerk of the United
2.4States House of Representatives and Minnesota's Senators and Representatives in Congress.
