A bill for an act
relating to transportation; appropriating money to conduct a highway mapping
study.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1. new text begin INTERSTATE HIGHWAY MAPPING; APPROPRIATION.

new text begin (a) $....... in fiscal year 2018 is appropriated to the commissioner of transportation to
conduct detailed highway mapping of interstate and trunk highways in Minnesota, in order
to evaluate and improve the highway system's readiness to accommodate autonomous
passenger vehicles, autonomous freight vehicles, and related technologies.

new text begin (b) Data collected during the highway mapping project must be incorporated into the
Department of Transportation's existing data set. Data gathered and analyzed as part of the
highway mapping project may include, but is not limited to, road geometry and lane-level
precision. The commissioner of transportation must make a basic level of the data collected
available to the public and interested parties in a format that is easy to disseminate.

new text begin (c) If the commissioner of transportation contracts with a private entity to perform the
highway mapping, the private entity must remove any physical sensors or other equipment
remaining at the completion of the highway mapping project.

new text begin (d) The appropriation under this section is available only in fiscal year 2018. Any unspent,
unobligated, or remaining funds cancel to the trunk highway fund on June 30, 2018.
