  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to elections; giving students who are 
  1.3             eligible voters the right to time off from school to 
  1.4             vote; amending Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 
  1.5             204C.04, subdivision 1. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 204C.04, 
  1.8   subdivision 1, is amended to read: 
  1.9      Subdivision 1.  [RIGHT TO BE ABSENT.] Every employee and 
  1.10  student who is eligible to vote in an election has the right to 
  1.11  be absent from work or school for the purpose of voting during 
  1.12  the morning of the day of that election, without penalty or 
  1.13  deduction from salary or wages because of the absence; or in the 
  1.14  case of a student, without the absence being considered 
  1.15  truancy.  An employer or other person may not directly or 
  1.16  indirectly refuse, abridge, or interfere with this right or any 
  1.17  other election right of an employee or student.
