  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to crime; expanding the definition of 
  1.3             substantial bodily harm; amending Minnesota Statutes 
  1.4             1998, section 609.02, subdivision 7a. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 609.02, 
  1.7   subdivision 7a, is amended to read: 
  1.8      Subd. 7a.  [SUBSTANTIAL BODILY HARM.] "Substantial bodily 
  1.9   harm" means bodily injury which involves a temporary but 
  1.10  substantial disfigurement, or which causes a temporary but 
  1.11  substantial loss or impairment of the function of any bodily 
  1.12  member or organ, or which causes a fracture of the bone or 
  1.13  cartilage within any bodily member. 
  1.14     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.15     Section 1 is effective August 1, 1999, and applies to 
  1.16  crimes committed on or after that date.
