  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to marriage; authorizing district court 
  1.3             referees to solemnize marriages; amending Minnesota 
  1.4             Statutes 1996, section 517.04. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 517.04, is 
  1.7   amended to read: 
  1.8      517.04 [SOLEMNIZATION.] 
  1.9      Marriages may be solemnized throughout the state by a judge 
  1.10  of a court of record, a retired judge of a court of record, a 
  1.11  referee appointed under section 484.70, a court administrator, a 
  1.12  retired court administrator with the approval of the chief judge 
  1.13  of the judicial district, a former court commissioner who is 
  1.14  employed by the court system or is acting pursuant to an order 
  1.15  of the chief judge of the commissioner's judicial district, the 
  1.16  residential school administrators of the Minnesota state academy 
  1.17  for the deaf and the Minnesota state academy for the blind, a 
  1.18  licensed or ordained minister of any religious denomination, or 
  1.19  by any mode recognized in section 517.18.
