A resolution
memorializing Congress and the President of the United States to provide funding to
maintain and restore the Officers' Club building located on the grounds of the historic
Fort Snelling and to provide additional funding to support the valuable services that
the 934th Airlift Wing provides to military officers, military families, and civilians at
the Officers' Club.

WHEREAS, historic Fort Snelling, built in the 1820s, is a National Historic Landmark
that helps tell the story of Minnesota, from before the Civil War through World War II and to
the present day; and

WHEREAS, the buildings on the grounds of historic Fort Snelling are a tangible piece of
Minnesota's history that provide a link to the state's culture and past; and

WHEREAS, the origins of the Officers' Club at Fort Snelling date back to March 1,
1905, when a military club was installed to provide officers in Minnesota with a place to relax
and socialize; and

WHEREAS, in 1934, the present Officers' Club, existing as building 20A on the grounds of
historic Fort Snelling, was opened embodying a distinctive architectural style that consists of an
interior adorned with handcrafted woodwork and labor intensive stone work; and

WHEREAS, the 934th Airlift Wing has been the custodian of the Officers' Club since the
1950s and has been serving military officers, military families, and civilians there ever since; and

WHEREAS, many military officers and military families have been served by the Officers'
Club throughout the many modern wars and conflicts that our nation has endured; and

WHEREAS, the Officers' Club is an important historical asset of this state, both for its
architectural significance and craftsmanship, and for its uniqueness as a symbol of Minnesota
military history and culture; and

WHEREAS, the Officers' Club continues to be a unique place for military personnel,
military families, and civilians to socialize and find fellowship; and

WHEREAS, preserving the Officers' Club building at historic Fort Snelling and the services
that are provided there is an important way to honor our military, to honor our unique Minnesota
military history and culture, and to honor all the past and future events that have been and will be
supported by the Officers' Club; NOW, THEREFORE,

BE IT RESOLVED by the Governor and the Legislature of the State of Minnesota that it
urges the President and the Congress of the United States to provide adequate funding to maintain
and restore the Officers' Club building located on the grounds of historic Fort Snelling and to
provide additional funding to support the valuable services that the 934th Airlift Wing provides to
military officers, military families, and civilians at the Officers' Club.

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of State of the State of Minnesota is
directed to prepare copies of this memorial and transmit them to the President and the Secretary of
the United States Senate, the Speaker and the Clerk of the United States House of Representatives,
the United States Secretary of State, and to Minnesota's Senators and Representatives in Congress.
